The Padmavaat Circus — A Brief Summary

Padmavati row

OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS, the nation has witnessed a bizarre issue. We have been battling with the question of whether a film should be allowed to screen or not. It is definitely a matter of concern if a movie is not allowed to be showcased, and even more if the makers and artists receive threats. But, don't you think we gave it more importance than what it really deserved? It certainly was not worthy of the space for prime time debates every single day as if it is the “only” thing India is concerned about.

From the beginning, I was appalled by the duration of time Padmavati remain in the news. After the news, they do a stupid TV debate about the same. We then also saw TV anchors giving a "no-objection certificate" to the movie happily. It was at a time when the film had not been even sent to the CBFC. But, there was a journalist/anchor who was showing the educational crisis in the country instead of a frivolous debate of whether Padmavati to be allowed to release or not. Definitely, he deserves a special mention for showing one of India's "real" issues and not getting tempted with Padmavati to increase TV ratings. In case if you don't know, he is NDTV’s Ravish Kumar. You can check out his 'university series' programme.

Earlier, we didn’t know what Karni Sena was. But in the age of social media, the violent threats issued by them, against filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali and actress Deepika Padukone, gets widely circulated on the internet; which later also gave them spaces in the mainstream media. Our media was, obviously, obliged to show such news for the sake of ratings so much so that they become obsessed with Padmavati and Karni Sena.

All these drama and circus resulted in a tremendous publicity of the film, all for free. Though the kind of publicity it received is negative, it was an effective one. Had these protests not taken place, nobody would have given a damn if Padmavati releases or not.

The impunity with which the fringe group has taken law and order in their hand creating a ruckus in the country shows that they enjoy the support of political party(ies). As the movie has only been blocked only in the BJP ruling states, it clarifies which party was providing the direct support. But even the opposition, which I suppose is Congress party, preferred not to speak up against them. The caste-based politics, probably, is responsible for keeping the opposition's mouth shut. After all, it's a whole Rajputs vote-bank out there to be messed up with.

It can't be refuted that there are certain emotions attached with Rani Padmini among the Rajasthani people, especially in those rowdy Rajputs who consider themselves brave & royal. Yes, the royalty of Rajasthan can be observed in its palaces and forts, it is very well preserved. However, such royalty is only a thing of the past. It definitely needs to be cherished, but without hallucinating.

Coming to the content of the movie Padmaavat, the obvious question is— what is so inflammatory about it? But before that, how they’ve come to know about it? It clearly shows that a large section of the community has been brainwashed.

The whole drama started because of the "ghoomar song" where Padmavati can be seen dancing in front of Maharawal Ratan Singh while everyone watches. This video song is probably an "item number" of the conservatives. According to the Rajputs, Padmavati has never danced in front of anyone. As the existence of Padmini is disputed while the siege of Alauddin Khalji to the Chittorgarh was a real event in history, it is disastrously confusing.

Meanwhile, I tried to understand this with the “Rajputana perspective”. For which, I asked one of my friend who calls himself a “proud Rajput”— his views on Padmavati. All Rajputs, in fact, have an awkward sense of pride. Their mere being a Rajput is a reason to be proud. Nevertheless, I find it laughable, I never tried to ridicule his sense of pride. But on second thought, I tried to reason— where does this pride come from? I think this ‘pride’ comes from the inspiring stories and folklore from the past. Padmavati is one such example.

I was hoping to hear something inflammatory about the movie. I even deliberately provoked him to say something against the movie and also vent out his anger against Sanjay Leela Bhansali. But to my surprise, he said that he is waiting for the movie eagerly. And then, he asked me:

“Chalega kya?” (So, will you come?)
“Kahan?” (Where?)
“Padmavati dekhne aur kahan?” (To see Padmavati, where else?)

*It is only then I realized not all Rajputs of this country are against the release of movie Padmavati.*

So, what made some people (most people) of the community believe that the movie Padmaavat is trying to portray Rani Padmini in a way that casts aspersion on the Rajput community?

Ignorance seems to be the answer. In school years, most children do not seem interested in the subject of history. And even those interested are not taught properly. And when they grow up, ignorance becomes their best friend, especially if history is concerned. This ignorance gives rise to false beliefs and superstitions making people vulnerable to false and selfish propaganda. Therefore, in a nation where education about history to the masses is primarily done by the means of films, these kinds of complications are bound to happen.

The Sensational Case of Salman Khan and Black Bucks, After Two Decades Justice Served?

Before beginning, I would like to reiterate that Salman Khan is just a cinema star, nothing more nothing less. So leave celebrity worship aside and try to be pragmatic. Salman Khan’s past was nowhere similar to his modern-day superhit films. Infamously known as the bad boy of Bollywood, he has been directly involved in criminal cases of pretty grave nature. Hit-and-run case , in which he allegedly under the influence of alcohol ran his car on the footpath in which one person was killed and four got injured. In that case, first his driver was made a scapegoat but a little while later, things became murky the result of which Khan was acquitted by the Mumbai HC in 2015. His relationship with Aishwarya Rai (Bachchan) fetched an excellent TRPs to our media, first with and rumours about their relationship, then with confirmed rumours, and even after the break-up, when former miss world accused him of harassing her. Black Bucks/Chinkara poaching case , about which this post is all abo...

Accidental Prime Minister Compels India To Talk Manmohan Singh And Corruption Before Election, A Review

The media advisor to former prime minister Manmohan Singh, with his boring job, has been able to commercialize a story of his boss right to the screen. No one would have imagined this possibility when the book was launched in the midst of the 2014 election; when it also made a buzz with the allegations giving birth to controversies. But with the change of government after the election, things cooled down and people forgot their highly qualified yet good-for-nothing economist PM. Sanjay Dutt Hero Or Villain? A Review Of Sanju Baba’s Journey As Both

The Sanjay Dutt biopic “Sanju” was released on 29th of June made by one of the best filmmakers of the B-town, Rajkumar Hirani. It was marketed as an “unbelievably true story”. Indeed Dutt’s journey is unbelievable. However, there have been many unbelievable personalities too such as Dawood or Osama. Sorry for comparing Dutt with Don and Terrorist. The drugs, booze, women, and AK 56 make Sanju a largely negative character in the real world. Not his fault, according to the film. Some people say Sanjay Dutt doesn’t deserve a biopic as there are many “good” people, with their “good” work, that go unnoticed. The argument over whether Dutt deserves a biopic or not is inane. It’s like saying Dhoni’s biopic should have been made after his retirement. The truth is, biopics are made on interesting people, not the good ones, especially if it is of commercial in nature. If that interesting people is a negative character, it gets more publicity. Also, a “fictional” biopic cannot be real. Be i...

A Mesmerizing Winter Morning

WAKING UP on a winter morning takes courage. It is a sort of sacrifice only a few people are able to make, those having a remarkable will-power. Unless you have a strong reason to get something done, making this sacrifice is a herculean task, almost impossible. In winter, there is a joy in oversleeping, in cuddling up under a nice warm and cosy blanket. What most people do is— they wake up, see the time, and get back to sleep again. Even when being awake, it becomes extremely difficult to actually get up and resume our work or study. What happens is that our mind succumbs to the bodily comfort of enjoying a great peaceful sleep underneath a blanket. I, too, belong to this group, the group that is not ready to give up morning sleep easily on any day; and when it comes to giving up the sleep of a winter morning, we just cannot. However, one day, on a fairly cold winter morning, when I supposed to be in the sleep mode, I not only got up early but went for a walk too. Dressed up ...

The Great Indian Bank Fraud - A Look Into PNB SCAM

India’s second largest bank, PNB, has been duped with a massive amount of 11400 cr by a billionaire jewellery designer Nirav Modi, now a fugitive. Before being named and investigated in the mega- bank-fraud, the celebrity designer has been featured in Forbes India's Richest People List 2016. Not to mention, Mr Modi has been seen in the World Economic Forum summit at Davos with PM Modi himself. It explains his network. There must be multiple levels of corruption involved in Nirav Modi scam — from the highest management in the bank to bureaucracy, all must have colluded together to make this scam come true. Netas, too, are part of big businessman-banker nexus as they are the ones who fund the election campaign secretly. To reiterate, political parties fundings still do not come under the scanner of RTI. Indian Banking Exposed PNB, in a statement, said that fraudulent transactions took place in one of its branches in Mumbai with their apparent connivance. A single br...

New Year Letter Without Fireworks

Dearest you , First of all, many thanks for being my support all these years… I don't know who I am to you, an honest blogger who expresses his view about the world, or a clown who provide free entertainment for his own fun. So far I’ve only tried to bring forth stories that I believed was worth your time and I'll continue this endeavour. I want you to bear some more of my musings in the form of blog/social media posts but with absolute freedom of your choice. I'm no comedian, but keeping the humour alive is one of the prime objectives of my writings. I can’t sacrifice humour to sound serious and intellectual. But unlike professional comedians, I won't guarantee if I’ll always make you laugh. Sometimes my jokes are really bad. I have no political affiliation, but sometimes I do take sides, not extreme though. The 2019 political battle will be exciting, especially after BJP’s recent defeat in the four major state assembly election. I’ve been quite inconsistent...

Today's Bulletin: Priya Prakash Varrier’s killing wink, Taimur’s daily schedule, 'Rashtramata' Padmavati , Donald Trump tweets, Different types of jihad - love jihad, hate jihad, cow jihad, North Korea’s ‘mental dictator’ Kim Jong Un's preparation for a nuclear war, and last, but not the least —An esteemed panel of 'alleged' experts and politicians engaging in an ‘alleged’ debate. If you are a consumer of Indian media, particularly the news channels, you might have got the idea of what my opening words are and where I’m trying to point it. If you think, all mediawallahs  (media personnel) are same, or that these are really important topics worthy of your time, you need to think again.
